A profile of the Canadian population: Where we live is a detailed analysis of growth rates, demographic trends and geographic distribution.

Census: Raw Data

Access restricted. Available to registered students, faculty and staff at: UW, WLU. Eligible users can also connect from home.

Mounted on the TriUniversity Data Resources (TDR), many raw data sets from the 1971 census on, can be accessed and tabulations performed. Under "TDR Data", select "Web Retrieval" and then choose "Canadian Census" from the drop-down menu retrieval system.

E-STAT

Access restricted. Available to registered students, faculty and staff at: UW, WLU. Eligible users can also connect from home.

This interactive software allows you to create tables, graphs or maps on a variety of subjects. Data is derived from the Canadian census (1665, on), CANSIM II or the "Official Voting Results". For teaching purpose, data in E-Stat is updated only once a year, usually in the summer, before the beginning of a new academic year.

Historical Statistics of Canada This volume contains about 1,088 statistical tables on the social, economic and institutional conditions of Canada from the start of Confederation in 1867 to the mid-1970s. The tables are arranged in sections with an introduction explaining the content of each section, the principal sources of data for each table, and general explanatory notes regarding the statistics.

Databases by Name

CANSIM / CANSIM II

Access restricted. It is available to registered students, faculty and staff at UW and WLU. Eligible users can also connect from home.

CANSIM is Statistics Canada's computerized database and information retrieval service. CANSIM I is no longer being updated and has been replaced by CANSIM II. It includes more data than CANSIM I and is multi-dimensional, including time series as well as data based on geographical region, sex, age or other "dimensions". CANSIM II can be accessed through the University of Toronto's Computing in the Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) service or through E-STAT. Each service offers it's own front end. The data in E-STAT is updated only once a year, usually in the summer, before the beginning of a new academic year.

Statistical Profile of Canadian Communities A statistical profile is presented for all Canadian communities (cities, towns, villages, etc.) Information is provided on education, income and work, families and dwellings, births and deaths, general population information, and health information. A mapping feature is available for viewing the location of a community within Canada.
TriUniversity Data Resources (TDR)

Databases' access restricted. Available to registered students, faculty and staff at: UW, WLU. Eligible users can also connect from home.

Using a drop-down menu retrieval system, derive and perform tabulations on subsets of data from selected collections of statistics, such as Statistics Canada's Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) , the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and other agencies. Holdings include Canadian census data, social, labour and consumer finance surveys, election results and many more. Check the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) or the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) sites to find out which data sets are available. If they are not listed on the TDR site, or you would like to receive the data directly (FTP) instead, please fill in the request form.

TriUniversity Data Resources (TDR): External Data A selection of freely available statistical web sites from Canada, the United States and other countries is mounted on the TriUniversity Data Resources (TDR) Click on "External Data" and select one of the following categories: agriculture and natural resources; environment; finance; geography; health; science; and socio-economic.
United Nations' "InfoNation" From the United Nations, this site allows you to generate statistical and comparative tables on any of their member countries in just two steps.

3. Subscribed Data Resources

(Please note: Access to subscribed data resources is restricted. These are only available to registered students, faculty and staff at: UW, WLU. Eligible users can also connect from home.)

CANSIM: Multi-dimensional socio-economic data, including time series as well as data based on geographical region, sex, age or other "dimensions". University of Toronto's Computing in the Humanities and Social Sciences' (CHASS) web interface was designed for easier access to Statistics Canada's CANSIM data. If this connection is too slow, try the second access site. The data is also available at the E-STAT site with a different interface, but updated only once a year, usually in the summer, before the beginning of a new academic year. (Help: CHASS, E-STAT)
